Marriage Delay and Denial: Timing delayed marriage

By Visti Larsen, Guide and Guru: Pt. Sanjay Rath

Timing delayed marriage

The Naisargika daśa of Venus is from age 12-32. This is the best time to bring children into the planet. Marriage beyond the age of 32 may be considered a biological/natural delay. Whilst marriage in these years is expected, many professionals and academics marry in the Naisargika daśa of Jupiter from 32-50.

Malefics Saturn, Rāhu and Ketu rule the ages from 36 to 48, and are the real delayers of marriage.

Combustion further delays marriage until 54, whilst Graha yuddha can delay further.

Graha Age
Saturn 36-40
Ketu 40-44
Rāhu 44-48
Combustion & War (any planet) [***research]
Sun 50-54
Moon 54-58
Venus* 58-62
Mars 62-66
Mercury 66-70
Jupiter 70-74
Saturn 74-82
Ketu 82-90
Rāhu 90-98

Case Studies:

Chart 1. Elizabeth Barrett Browning, born 6th March 1806, 7 PM, Durham, United Kingdom.

The famous author also has Moon in the Lagna, as her wealth arising from her fame is due to Jupiter’s aspect on the Lagna.

D9-7L Mercury afflicted and combust by Mars and Sun in D1à curse of uncle! 6H gives diseases.

The chart of Browning shows the Lagna lord Mercury afflicted and combust in the sixth house of disease with the eighth lord of long-term disease. This looks particularly dire for the chart given that the D9-seventh lord is also Mercury and thus would cause difficulties in getting married as well! Specifically, the Sun is a Māraka to the seventh house-Virgo in D-9 and should deny marriage all together.

However, Saturn is the lord of the sign and is well placed in the 2nd house of wealth, showing that the health issues will be solved, and marriage can happen!

9th Lord shows when the freedom will end/begin. Venus is in Pisces hence Venus, Jupiter and Ketu will decide. Venus is the 26th year, Jupiter is the 32nd year as Ketu is the 40th. However, Jupiter in 4H will be earlier, viz. 16th. Ketu is the oldest at 40.

She incurred an injury and painful illness at age 16 which was never solved nor remedied. Her health made her largely immobile and only when she, at the age of 40, met her spouse was she motivated to end her life of solitude. She worked hard and overcame her ails, resulting in her marriage and parenthood, and further fame as an author.

Chart 2. Richard Dean Anderson (Macgyver), born 23rd Jan 1950, 13:05, Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA.

Two Arudha Lagnas exist for Taurus, one initial placed in Virgo and a later placed in Capricorn. With Mars and Ketu joined the former, he sought to be a hockey player until breaking both his arms! This dream would have shattered at the age of 14 (7+7). With Venus in the Capricorn-Arudha he sought a life in entertainment and studied to become an actor.

Saturn-Sun exchange signs à change of views!

With Upapada in Aquarius, lorded by Saturn and the Arudha Lagna in Capricorn, the stage is set for a single life in the entertainment business. The exchange of signs between Sun and Saturn marks an interesting change in his views. From birth till the age of 22 (Sun) he would have been inclined to marry and have a family, due to the nature of the Sun. But after 22 his priorities would change until the age of 36 (Saturn) when the exchange would enact again! Post 36 he would again be inclined to marriage.

D9-7L Jupiter in 9H combust à not manifesting until 49-54 years of age.

Jupiter is the D9-7th lord and is combust by the same Sun, hence despite a desire for marriage, no marriage can occur until the age of 49-54 years of age. Finally, in his age of 49 his partner gave birth to their first child and he began his pursuit of family life.

Chart 3. Jerry Brown, born 7th April 1938, 12:34, San Francisco, CA, USA.

With Arudha Lagna  and Darapada (A7) joined, Brown would be inclined towards intimate relationships, however, Saturn shares Graha Dṛṣti upon both, and also lords the Upapada giving an inclination towards bachelorhood. With the impetus to a single life arising from the Upapada, this implies that Brown’s partners would not encourage a commitment towards a marriage or similar long-term relationship.

With Mercury and Venus placed in the 12th house from the Arudha Lagna, we would expect a rejection of marriage, but with Ketu in the same Arudha a reversal occurs and places these planets in the 2nd house from AL, thus supporting marriage after Brown would adhere to a spiritual lifestyle.

With the D9-7th lord being Mars, joined the 12th lord Mercury and Māraka Venus, we should have expected a complete denial of marriage and dedication towards career and work (10th house).

However, Mars is strong in own sign and will overpower all the planets joined it showing at most a delay in marriage and not denial.

Ages of Mars are 3, 7, 28 and 66. Married at age 67.

Marriage Delay and Denial – Case Studies

Marriage Delay and Denial – Case Studies

By Visti Larsen, Guide and Guru: Pt. Sanjay Rath

Example 1: King Otto of Bavaria, born 27th April 1848, 10:30, Munich, Bavaria, Germany.

King of Bavaria Otto

With King Otto’s Arudha Lagna placed in Aries with the Sun, a true servant of the people is born! Unfortunately, with Mercury and Venus placed in the twelfth house therefrom, the king would reject relationships and social obligations. With Saturn further aspecting the Arudha Lagna, a tendency towards bachelorhood is indicated. With Saturn in the 8th house as 9th lord, this will arise due to illness.

The same Saturn is also placed in the 12th house from Venus showing a delay in marrying because of the same disease. With Saturn in the 8th house whilst Mars occupies the 12th house, bondage or incarceration due to health problems is also indicated! Mars and Saturn specifically causes psychiatric problems according to Praśna Marga.

Mars is also the 7th lord in the Navāmśa and its placement in a Dusthāna speaks ill of marriage. Venus is a dire Māraka to Mars, and its rāśi dṛṣṭi upon Mars causes the denial of marriage.

The King never married. He died in incarceration and spoke to his only love whilst under care.

Example 2: Jane Austen, born 16th December 1775, 23:45, Steventon, Hampshire, United Kingdom.

Jane Austen

Akin to the chart of Mary Cassatt, Saturn is placed in the Lagna, and this time conjoined the Moon therein. This combination gives the power of the pen, and with the Moon along the 1st or 7th axis, lasting fame beyond death can arise. As the same Saturn lords over the Arudha Lagna, we again see a tendency of seeking a solitude living.

Saturn is also placed in the 12thhouse from Venus, thus acting to delay or deny marriage. In Jupiter-Daśā, Saturn Antaradaśā she received a marriage proposal that she rejected, and since then shunned any attempt to marry.

The seventh lord from the Navāmśa is the Sun, whose māraka are both Moon and Saturn. The Sun is ill placed in the Rāśi (D-1) chart due to its weak digbala position in the 4th house. Therein it joins the 8th lord Mars, thus delaying marriage, and finally both Saturn and Moon aspect the Sun denying marriage all together. Notably, the same Saturn and Moon gave her fame as an author!

Example 3: H.S. Green, born 16th September 1861, 3:00, 52n38, 5e0, LMT.

H.S. Green

According to sage Parāśara, Leo Lagna with Mars and Jupiter brings income and wealth from fame! Mars and Jupiter are excellent and coaching and guiding, as the strong Venus specifically shows one who guides by seeing, viz. reading the future. Green was an excellent Astrologer.

With Saturn joining the Lagna, as in previous cases, we need to examine the Arudha Lagna and Upapada for potential bachelorhood. Herein,  Saturn aspects both with Rāśi Dṛṣṭi showing bachelorhood due to circumstances.

Despite Saturn’s aspect, Venus joined the Arudha Lagna will give intimate relationships, and work within entertainment.

The seventh lord from the Navāmśa (D-9) is Mars, whose māraka is Venus. Mars is joined the fame-wealth combination in the Lagna, but with the 6th and 8th lord Saturn and Jupiter, this sets the stage for delay in marriage. Venus’ Rāśi Dṛṣṭi from Libra, as the māraka denies marriage all together, and so also he never married.

Example 4: Maria Elisabeth, Archduchess of Austria, born 13th December 1680, 6:30 AM, Linz, Austria.

Maria Elisabeth

With Saturn lording the Upapada in Aquarius, and placed in the Arudha Lagna in Cancer, a political leader, who wishes to stay single, is born. The position of Saturn in Cancer is a common trait among politicians and rulers. The same Arudha Lagna houses Venus and Mercury in the 6th house from it, showing one who renounces marriage and could live a reserved life.

Gemini is the seventh house in Navāmśa whose Māraka is the Moon. With Mercury joined the 6th from the Arudha Lagna, the prospect of marriage is rejected, and due to joining 12th lord Venus this is further delayed. Finally, the Māraka-Moon aspects Mercury by Rāśi Dṛṣṭi showing a complete denial of marriage. The Archduchess was known to be courted by potential spouses and could have married but rejected every opportunity.

Marriage Delay and Denial – Part 1.

Marriage Delay and Denial – Part 1.

By Visti Larsen, Guide and Guru: Pt. Sanjay Rath

Whilst the Lagna or Rāśi (D-1) chart indicates the individual’s tendencies, ideals and views, the deciding factor for any event depends on the divisional charts. Herein, the Rāśi (D-1) chart can indicate the individuals wishes and experiences in relationships, but the Lord of the Navāmśa Lagna will be the final deciding factor in deciding when or whether a person will marry.

Classical background

लग्नेशलग्नभागेशौ रिश्फरन्ध्रारिगौ यदि।
मारकेशयुतौ दृष्टौ जातोऽसौ निर्धनो नरः॥ ११॥
lagneśalagnabhāgeśau riśpharandhrārigau yadi |
mārakeśayutau dṛṣṭau jāto’sau nirdhano naraḥ || 11||
Bṛhat Parāśara Horā Śastra, Daridrayogādhyāyaḥ

Translation: Should the Lord of the Varga Lagna be joined or aspected by the sixth, eighth or twelfth lord, as well as the Māraka, the person will suffer poverty.

Commentary:What type of poverty is indicated? It cannot be monetary poverty as not all the vargas affect one’s bank balance. This must be a poverty of deprivation, wherein the deprivation depends on the indications of the Varga in question!

Tradition on Navāmśa Kendra

The tradition extends the examination of the Lagna to the four Kendra. This accepts the understanding that the Navāmśa depicts more than marriage alone, but several of life’s facets. This principle divides the four kendra, or quadrant-houses, in the Navāmśa (D-9), into the four pillars of Dharma (duty, health and intelligence), Artha (wealth and career), Kāma (enjoyments and relationships) and Mokṣa (freedom and spirituality).

Should the Lord of Kāma-ayana be joined the sixth/eighth/twelfth lords in the D1, and further be joined the māraka of the Navāmśa-7H, the person will be deprived of marriage.

Commentary: Any affliction to the Lord of Kāma-Ayana will hinder marriage. The Dusthāna or their lords cause a vacuum causing either loss or deprivation, but this may not be permanent.

The Māraka adjoining such a vacuum would cause the loss or deprivation to be permanent!

Herein, we need to apply Parāśara’s designation of Māraka, and specifically with reference to the sign in the seventh house in the Navāmśa!

Sign Māraka Sign Māraka
Venus Libra Mars
Jupiter, Moon & Mars Scorpio Venus
Moon Sagittarius Saturn
Mercury Capricorn Mars
Saturn Aquarius Sun, Mars and Jupiter
Sun & Venus Pisces Mercury

Case study

Mary Cassatt, born 22nd May 1844, 23:54, Pittsburgh, PA, USA.

In the given chart, we find Arudha Lagna placed in Libra. This promotes a career within entertainment or the arts. With lord Venus joined Mars in the sixth house, an even house, this promotes even more art, but also cause long bouts of celibacy or separation. Known for avoiding any such temptations, Mary was fully dedicated to her passion and her family.

Among planets, Saturn signifies those who follow Brahma or Brahma-acharya, and do not marry. Saturn is in the 1st house, aspecting both the Arudha Lagna (AL) and Upapada (UL) by graha dṛṣṭi (desire) showing a complete unwillingness to marry. Its retrogression makes this pronounced!

The Navāmśa houses Venus in the twelfth house which speaks against the opportunity to marry. The lord of the seventh house in Navāmśā (D-9) is Jupiter, which is placed in 3rd house in Māraṇa Kāraka Sthāna in the Rāśi (D-1) supporting a denial. The Māraka to Sagittarius (seventh house in D9) is Saturn and aspects Jupiter as well by graha dṛṣṭi to show the personal unwillingness to marry. Saturn has completely dominated the chart to hinder the person’s marriage and relationships. Notably, Saturn and Moon opposite each other show a rājayoga for fame and name beyond her lifetime!

What Venus isn’t?

What Venus isn’t?

The topic of relationships in astrology and the whispers about Venus is forever present and actual. In fact, we can confidently say that the two topics, namely relationships (karaka Venus) and finances (karaka Mercury) are the driving forces to much of our lives.

Being of Rajas guna, Venus represents that aspect of us that is full of desire, attachment, restlessness and constant activity (ref. Bhagavad Gita). No matter what astrological path or school one follows, Venus is always said to be responsible for relationships.

But do we really understand which role Venus plays, in the arena of all the other predictive techniques, when it comes to relationships and marriage? How is it different than the 7th house, or 7th lord, or Upapada, Navamsha, Darakaraka, etc.?

Few facts about Venus:

  1. Venus is not our way of thinking when it comes to the marriage – that is our 7th house. 7th house is our brain when it comes to the relationship, it is us in the relationship, our ideas, and philosophy.
The well-known saying “all is fair in love and war” and “it’s a thin line between love and hate” belongs to the 7th house as well. This house is also Maraka (killer), as well as the marriage house, and as such implies the role of ones partner as kavacha or protection (this becomes clearer when studying longevity combinations).

Different grahas cause grahana (eclipse) on the brain imparting certain conditions to the relationships. You can read about each planet in the 7th house in Bhrigu Sutras or in my teachers book Crux of Vedic Astrology, by Sanjay Rath. For more on marriage and relationships check out Visti´s course on sign Libra and Kalatra Sphuta – timing marriage and relationships.

2. Venus is not love! Before we talk about Venus on a graha level, Venus is of the Rajas guna or quality of desire, attachment, restlessness, the power of attraction; and Venus is of Jala tatwa or water element. So Venus is not love, Venus is an emotion (jala or water element) or attachment or infatuation with an expiration date rather than the “real love”. So which graha does represent real love?

3. Venus is not your spouse! Your spouse is your Upapada (the arudha of the 12th house), it is your 7th house in the Navamsha chart (first spouse anyhow). But it is karaka for a spouse in a man’s horoscope, whilst Guru is the same in the female horoscope. This explains how man vs. woman approach the relationship or look at it, but this is a topic for another day.

So what is Venus?

Venus is a naisargika (natural) karaka (significator) for the relationships and marriage. As such it shows the hand of God, or our own karmas, when it comes to the relationships. Venus is like a God who decides if he will give or not.

Try this one out: see where is Venus placed from the 7th house to see you attitude towards partner(s), count back from Venus to the 7th house and you will know the reason for the same.
