“If you have the knowledge, let others light their candles in it.”
In the true spirit of the quote from above, the month of May was all about knowledge-sharing.
If you haven’t already, my sincere recommendation is to listen to the lecture on the topic of The Astrological Soul: A Study of Eastern Astrology and Philosophy Part 1 & Part 2. The lecture was delivered by my Guruji, Pt. Sanjay Rath.
Another warm recommendation goes to checking the article by Visti Larsen WHICH AYANAMSA DO I USE? In this article Visti answers the reoccurring questions regarding the choice of the ayanamsa, what he has learned, what he uses and what he doesn’t use and why.
I happen to know that Visti also shares some really good and valuable lessons with those who subscribe to his weekly email. A small bite size part of it can be found below (to subscribe to Visti’s emails click here):
The first and most important lesson on transits and how to read them is: ‘what should be your reference point?’. Without this the transit analysis is not going to work, and the results will be vague and whimsical at best. e.g. Sade Sathi works, but not from the Moon’s Rāśi… but from its Navāṁśa! Whilst all the astrologers in the market highlight this important 7½ year event, doing so from the Moon’s Rāśi/D-1 placement will not provide the results one expects unless one reckons this from the Moon’s Navāṁśa position.
Translation: Taurus, Aries, and Aquarius are short. Capricorn, Gemini, Sagittarius, Pisces, and Cancer are even and the long ones are Scorpio, Virgo, Leo, and Libra. Starting from Aries, signs are masculine and feminine. Starting from East, Aries and its trines, Taurus and its trines, Gemini and its trines, Cancer and its trines will represent four cardinal directions of the world. After that, signs can be differentiated as krūra (harsh) and śubha (auspicious); and also as movable, fixed and dual as their type of movement.
Length of the signs
Firstly, herein we have division based
on length of the signs. This has to do with astronomical definition of Zodiac
or Bha chakra. In reality, it is not perfect circle, it is an elliptic. Two
signs before Aries, Aries and one sign after are short. Two sign before Libra,
Libra and one sign after are long ones. Signs in between are of the even
length. Exactly opposite point from the 00 of Libra is used for
starting the Zodiac, and because of it the Aries is shortest one. Later we will
see that the author also putting the Pisces in the category of short signs.
Also, this is very useful in depicting
size of the person. For this we need to look Lagna, Lagna Lord, Moon sign and

Sex of the signs
Starting from Aries, signs are masculine and feminine. So, Aries, Gemini, Leo, Libra, Sagittarius, and Aquarius are male signs and Taurus, Cancer, Virgo, Scorpio, Capricorn, and Pisces are female. The biggest utilization of this is related to the sex of a child in the Jātaka chart. There is one exception here: Gemini and Aquarius haven’t got enough strength to produce a male child, so in the matters connected to children, we will treat them as female signs. Also, Cancer and Pisces have the power to give a son, so in these matters, Cancer and Pisces will give male progeny.

related to signs are given in the chart. Directions are linked to the four
goals or ayana in the chart. There are four ayanas: Dharma, Artha, Kama and Mokṣa.
East is related to Dharma, South is related to Artha, West is related to Kama
and North is related to Mokṣa. About four ayana, see 20th śloka of

There is another division of signs based on direction.
Directions are of the crucial value for determining the place of living for a person as well as other similar questions. In this division, signs will show physical direction. Here Aries and Taurus are representing East, Pisces is Southeast, Aquarius and Capricorn are South, Sagittarius is Southwest, Libra and Scorpio are West, Virgo is Northwest, Leo and Cancer are North and finally Gemini is Northeast. In Vedic astrology, we use two different types of chakras related to direction. One is Dig chakra and another is Kala chakra. In Dig chakra, planets will give the most of their potential, and in the Kala chakra, they will show obstacles.

Krūra vs śubha
All odd signs are termed as krura or harsh signs. They are active by their nature. These are also known as fire (Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius) and air (Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius) signs. Fire signs are acting quickly and burning, while air signs are slow and persistent. All even signs are known as śubha or mild. They are earth (Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn) and water (Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces) signs. It shows that nature is very passive and calming.
Here, the author is mentioning the trines of a certain sign. Trines or Trikona literary means three corners. For the first sign, a trine is a fifth and ninth sign, and in a similar manner, we can define trines for all signs. Trikonas are very important and they are showing the fruits that one begets in this world. For them, it is said that they are the seat of Śri Lakṣmi.
will always be same tattva or primordial element. Word tattva is translated as
a true principle, principle that causes creation to occur. There are five
primary elements or tattvas. These are:
every sign, omnipresence
and Sun (and Ketu)
Trines will be always the same tattva or the element and Kendra will always have all four manifested types. These elements come together with the gunas or quality of the Raśis.
There are three types of movement:
movable or cara, fixed or sthira and dual or dvisvabhava. These three types are
based on three Gunas or qualities, namely: Satva, Rajas and Tamas. Satva is
quality of goodness, knowledge, sustenance. Rajas show creation of thing,
movement and high level of energy inside. Tamas show ignorance, darkness. These
three Gunas are represented by Tri Murti, i.e. Viṣṇu (omnipresent), Brahma
(omniscience) and Śiva (omnipotent). They are helping us to overcome all three,
because in Bhagavat Gita, it is said that we need to go beyond Gunas to get
liberation (nistraiguṇyo bhavārjuna –
be above the Gunas, O Arjuna. BG 2.45.).
Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn
Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius
Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces
Movement of signs can be also used to determine distance from one place to another. Here movable signs will show traveling overseas, dual is indicating travel that is still between countries borders or traveling from one city to another, and fixed signs show staying in the same place. For example, if the lord of the 10th house from the Moon is placed in a movable sign, a person may need to travel far to find work. (To learn all about work, profession and karma bhava, check out Visti’s Rama course here).
Sun’s entry into the sign Taurus, or Vedic Vrishabha, is also known as Vrishabha Sankranti. If you are interested in the mundane aspects of the Sun’s entry into different signs checkout Visti’s Rama courses [link].
Bull – The Symbol
Vrishabha or the bull is a well-known symbol for the second Zodiacal sign. But how much of knowledge has been hidden under this, at first glance, simple depiction?
Pandit Sanjay Rath said that the word symbol we can examine as Karaka, a doer. So, the symbol of the sign will show us the traits of the sign. For example, Taurus is symbolized by the bull, and as such can indicate one who is firm and determined, well built and strong, with high endurance power. As the second sign of the Zodiac, it maps into the 2nd house that is the first of the Artha trines that have to do with wealth, hence major Dhana (or wealth) yogas are involving the 2nd house or the 2nd lord. On the Tatwa (elemental) level, this is the first of the three Prithvi or Earth element signs, and people indicated by the sign Taurus can be very practical, have a good understanding of wealth, which also implies the necessary knowledge or skills for its creation.
Taurus & other planets
As Venus is the lord of the sign, Taurus has to do with beauty, art, and harmony; as Mercury is the 2nd lord from Taurus, Taurus can give very a melodious voice, strong family concept and being lorded over the by Moon as well, it can indicate precious gemstones (Moon is the karaka for the gemstones); as the longevity-exaltation sign for Rahu it gives longevity, and being a night sign, Taurus can indicate mantra knowledge. This is also the debilitation sign for the longevity of the Ketu, Ketu is the Moksha karaka and as such, it can feel defeated when forced to deal with the topics of wealth, sustenance, though it is protective of the family as Ketu himself is known as the Kula devata or family deity.
Sign Taurus and its parts
Just like the other Zodiacal signs, Taurus can also be divided into smaller parts based on the planet lording the sign. In this manner, the whole sign can be divided into 6 parts, which in degrees would be 5 degrees each. Each part is the different part of the bull that will indicate different traits inside of the same sign. The depiction, as well as interpretation for each of the twelve sings, can be found here.
0 – 5
Tail of the bull
Just like tail wifts away the flies and bad smell, people born with Ascendant or other special lagna (such as Moon, Atmakaraka, etc.) will tend to be calming presence, can make things easier, nicer and deal with the bad energy;
5 – 10
Power of the hind legs
These people are forceful, have a strong drive, can push hard;
10 – 15
Power to segment and digest knowledge and then use it;
15 – 20
Represents ability to carry the burdens of life, even physical burdens, and if connected with one’s profession it can indicate therapists or somebody who is physically carrying the large burden;
20 – 25
Has to do with pulling, people who are good at helping others out of a problem, one who can lift the fallen, and take them out of the suffering;
25 – 30
Head and the horns
It is said that if the head of the cow is lifted it shows intellectual use of knowledge, but when the head goes down horns are important and bull is ready to charge*.
* Satwa planets look up, always looking for the higher knowledge; Rajas planets look straight or ahead, and in this context, they can show thinking or deciding; Tamas planets look down and planets in this portion of the sign can indicate the aggression of the bull, somebody who is ready for the fight.
Shri Krishna is known as the god of compassion, tenderness, and love and is one of the most beloved Hindu gods. He is also known as Govinda “chief herdsman”, and Gopala “Protector of the ‘Go'”, which means “Soul” or “the cows”.
Vishnu’s avatar Sri Krishna was born as Taurus (Vrshabha) Ascendant in the last portion of the sign, indicating the head of the bull. This portion can be both brain/intellect or the horns, but with Satwa Moon on the ascendant, it indicates the head with the symbolism of knowledge and intelligence. Still, he was known as a fierce warrior, slayer of the demons, and the Avatar of the Kali Yuga. Note that the Moon here is placed in the hump portion of the bull indicating somebody who can carry the burdens of others.
Whilst reading the other life events, one should examine the whole chart. As an example, an important parivartana yoga including the ascendant lord in the 3rd house, and 3rd lord on ascendant explains his fierce battles with many demons and enemies and his crucial role as a charioteer during Mahabharata (Venus and Moon form Yanavantha yoga).
The Naisargika daśa of Venus is from age 12-32. This is the best time to bring children into the planet. Marriage beyond the age of 32 may be considered a biological/natural delay. Whilst marriage in these years is expected, many professionals and academics marry in the Naisargika daśa of Jupiter from 32-50.
Malefics Saturn, Rāhu and Ketu rule the ages from 36 to 48, and are the real delayers of marriage.
Combustion further delays marriage until 54, whilst Graha yuddha can delay further.

of Browning shows the Lagna lord Mercury afflicted and combust in the sixth
house of disease with the eighth lord of long-term disease. This looks
particularly dire for the chart given that the D9-seventh lord is also Mercury
and thus would cause difficulties in getting married as well! Specifically, the
Sun is a Māraka to the seventh house-Virgo in D-9 and should deny marriage all together.
Saturn is the lord of the sign and is well placed in the 2nd house
of wealth, showing that the health issues will be solved, and marriage can
Lord shows when the freedom will end/begin. Venus is in Pisces hence Venus, Jupiter
and Ketu will decide. Venus is the 26th year, Jupiter is the 32nd
year as Ketu is the 40th. However, Jupiter in 4H will be earlier, viz. 16th.
Ketu is the oldest at 40.
She incurred an injury and painful illness at age 16 which was never solved nor remedied. Her health made her largely immobile and only when she, at the age of 40, met her spouse was she motivated to end her life of solitude. She worked hard and overcame her ails, resulting in her marriage and parenthood, and further fame as an author.
Chart 2. Richard Dean Anderson (Macgyver), born 23rd Jan 1950, 13:05, Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA.
Lagnas exist for Taurus, one initial placed in Virgo and a later placed in
Capricorn. With Mars and Ketu joined the former, he sought to be a hockey
player until breaking both his arms! This dream would have shattered at the age
of 14 (7+7). With Venus in the Capricorn-Arudha
he sought a life in entertainment and
studied to become an actor.
exchange signs à
change of views!
Upapada in Aquarius, lorded by Saturn and
the Arudha Lagna in Capricorn, the stage is set for a single life in the
entertainment business. The exchange of signs between Sun and Saturn marks an
interesting change in his views. From birth till the age of 22 (Sun) he would
have been inclined to marry and have a family, due to the nature of the Sun.
But after 22 his priorities would change until the age of 36 (Saturn) when the
exchange would enact again! Post 36 he would again be inclined to marriage.
D9-7L Jupiter in 9H combust à not manifesting until 49-54 years of age.
the D9-7th lord and is combust by the same Sun, hence despite a
desire for marriage, no marriage can occur until the age of 49-54 years of age.
Finally, in his age of 49 his partner
gave birth to their first child and he began his pursuit of family life.
Chart 3. Jerry Brown, born 7th April 1938, 12:34, San Francisco, CA, USA.
Darapada (A7) joined, Brown would be inclined towards intimate relationships,
however, Saturn shares Graha Dṛṣti upon both, and also lords the Upapada giving
an inclination towards bachelorhood. With the impetus to a single life arising
from the Upapada, this implies that Brown’s partners would not encourage a
commitment towards a marriage or similar
Mercury and Venus placed in the 12th house from the Arudha Lagna, we
would expect a rejection of marriage, but with Ketu in the same Arudha a reversal occurs and places these
planets in the 2nd house from AL, thus supporting marriage after Brown
would adhere to a spiritual lifestyle.
D9-7th lord being Mars, joined the 12th lord Mercury and
Māraka Venus, we should have expected a complete denial of marriage and
dedication towards career and work (10th house).
Mars is strong in own sign and will overpower all the planets joined it showing
at most a delay in marriage and not denial.
Mars are 3, 7, 28 and 66. Married at age 67.
Example 1: King Otto of Bavaria, born 27th April 1848, 10:30, Munich, Bavaria, Germany.
Otto’s Arudha Lagna placed in Aries with the Sun, a true servant of the people
is born! Unfortunately, with Mercury and Venus placed in the twelfth house
therefrom, the king would reject relationships and social obligations. With
Saturn further aspecting the Arudha
Lagna, a tendency towards bachelorhood is indicated. With Saturn in the 8th house as 9th
lord, this will arise due to illness.
Saturn is also placed in the 12th house from Venus showing a delay
in marrying because of the same disease. With Saturn in the 8th
house whilst Mars occupies the 12th house, bondage or incarceration
due to health problems is also indicated! Mars and Saturn specifically causes psychiatric problems according to Praśna
also the 7th lord in the Navāmśa and its placement in a Dusthāna
speaks ill of marriage. Venus is a dire Māraka to Mars, and its rāśi dṛṣṭi upon
Mars causes the denial of marriage.
The King never
married. He died in incarceration and spoke to his only love whilst under care.
Example 2: Jane Austen, born 16th December 1775, 23:45, Steventon, Hampshire, United Kingdom.
Akin to the
chart of Mary Cassatt, Saturn is placed in the Lagna, and this time conjoined
the Moon therein. This combination gives the power of the pen, and with the
Moon along the 1st or 7th axis, lasting fame beyond death
can arise. As the same Saturn lords over the Arudha Lagna, we again see a
tendency of seeking a solitude living.
also placed in the 12thhouse from Venus, thus acting to delay or deny marriage.
In Jupiter-Daśā, Saturn Antaradaśā she received a marriage proposal that she
rejected, and since then shunned any attempt to marry.
lord from the Navāmśa is the Sun, whose māraka are both Moon and Saturn. The
Sun is ill placed in the Rāśi (D-1) chart due to its weak digbala position in the 4th house.
Therein it joins the 8th lord Mars, thus delaying marriage, and
finally both Saturn and Moon aspect the Sun denying marriage all together. Notably, the same Saturn and Moon
gave her fame as an author!
Example 3: H.S. Green, born 16th September 1861, 3:00, 52n38, 5e0, LMT.

lord from the Navāmśa (D-9) is Mars, whose māraka is Venus. Mars is joined the fame-wealth combination in the
Lagna, but with the 6th and 8th lord Saturn and Jupiter,
this sets the stage for delay in
marriage. Venus’ Rāśi Dṛṣṭi from Libra, as the māraka denies marriage all together, and so also he never married.
Example 4: Maria Elisabeth, Archduchess of Austria, born 13th December 1680, 6:30 AM, Linz, Austria.
lording the Upapada in Aquarius, and
placed in the Arudha Lagna in Cancer, a political leader, who wishes to stay
single, is born. The position of Saturn in Cancer is a common trait among
politicians and rulers. The same Arudha Lagna houses Venus and Mercury in the 6th
house from it, showing one who renounces marriage and could live a reserved
Gemini is the seventh house in Navāmśa whose Māraka is the Moon. With Mercury joined the 6th from the Arudha Lagna, the prospect of marriage is rejected, and due to joining 12th lord Venus this is further delayed. Finally, the Māraka-Moon aspects Mercury by Rāśi Dṛṣṭi showing a complete denial of marriage. The Archduchess was known to be courted by potential spouses and could have married but rejected every opportunity.
