अथ तन्वादि द्वादश भावस्थित बुधफलमाह
तत्रादौ लग्ने बुधफलम्

tatrādau lagne budhaphalam
atha now; tanva part of the body; adi and other; dvādaśabhāva twelve bhavas or houses; sthita standing, being placed in; budha the Mercury; phala fruit, result; māha great; tatrādau therefore, therein; lagne Lagna or ascendant; budhaphalam the results of the Mercury.
Translation: Now begins the twelve houses beginning from the Lagna and the placement of the Mercury therein. Therefore we can begin with the results of the Mercury in the ascendant.
विद्यावान् विवाहादिबहुश्रुतवान्॥ १॥
अनेकदेशे सार्वभौमः मन्त्रवादी पिशाछोच्चाटन
समर्थः मृदुभाषी विद्वान् क्षमीदयावान्॥ २॥

Translation: If Mercury is in the first house (ascendant), the native will be educated, he will have early marriage and will be well versed in Vedas. He will like to travel to many places (countries). He will be reciting sacred mantras and texts and will have power to free people from the influence of evil spirits. He will be soft spoken, learned, of a forgiving nature and kindhearted.
In his 27th year he will go on pilgrimages and will have enormous gains of wealth and will attain high academic skills.
If Mercury is conjoined malefic or is placed in a malefic sign native will suffer from pitta related diseases (fire element in the body), bilious troubles and jaundice.
If Mercury is conjoined benefic or is in a benefic sign, the native will be healthy. His body will shine like gold on account of good health, he will take interest in the study of astrology. He will have defective limb, will be inimical towards learned and will suffer from eye disease. In his 17th year he will have inimical relations with his brothers and will be deceitful.
If Mercury is in his sign of exaltation (Virgo) or in own sign (Gemini) he will have happiness from his brothers. He will go directly to haven (higher region) after his death.
If Mercury is associated with or aspected by a malefic or in his sign of debilitation (Pisces), the native will go to hell after his death. He will be deprived of the comforts of bed (sexual pleasures) and will be serving evil gods.
If Mercury is conjoined Saturn or other malefics, the native will suffer the loss of sight. If Mercury is conjoined with the lord of the sixth or a debilitated planet, there will be no eye trouble but he will be sinful and will be spending much on undeserving persons.
If Mercury is conjoined benefic he will have wealth, will be intelligent and a good stock of grains, he will be religious. He will be skilled in use of arms and in Ganita (mathematics and astronomy), will be happy and gain proficiency in logic, and will have strong body.
