Jyotish – Divine mathematics

E-mail Print PDF

I like to say that jyotish is divine mathematics because all the magic starts from the numerological values, being that of birth of the soul (or event) whose numerological value provide necessary tools to predict or that of spoken word or just by mere look at ones watch at important moment. There is no limit to this knowledge as there is no limit to divine energy which is surrounding us and from whom everything is born.

Jyotish or Vedic astrology has its origin in Vedas or ancient divine knowledge. Jyotish is Vedanga or one of the six limbs of Veda (next to Siksha, Vyakarana, Chandas, Nirukta and Kalpa). It is considered one of the most important aspects of Vedas because it represents eyes of the Veda and with that, ability to see ones past, present and future.

The most important work on Jyotish or jyotish classic is Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS) or monumental work of great sage Parashara in which is narrated his dialog with his faithful disciple Maitreya. It all starts like this:
“Once upon a time, offering his obeisance to all knowing Sage Parashara and with folded hands, Maitreya asked him: O Venerable, Astrology, the suprime limb of the Vedas has three divisions viz. Hora, Ganita and Samhita. Even amongst the said three divisions, Hora is still far excellent. I desire to know of its glorious aspects from you. Kindly tell them to me. How was this universe created? How will it come to an end? Kindly tell me in detail the relationship between those born on this earth and those existing on the skies…”
